The FTC says Amazon has issued more than $845 million in refunds to eligible consumers. Under a revised settlement order, additional eligible Prime customers may receive automatic payments through April 2027.

The main point for customers is simple: legitimate refunds are automatic. No one should have to pay a fee, share a password or buy anything to receive one.

Why Amazon Prime refunds are being issued

The FTC accused Amazon of enrolling consumers in Prime memberships without proper consent and making it unnecessarily difficult for some customers to cancel.

Amazon agreed to a settlement that included money for affected consumers and a civil penalty. The settlement created a process for issuing refunds to eligible Prime customers.

The FTC says Amazon has been sending payments since late 2025. Newer changes to the settlement expanded the group of people who may qualify for an automatic refund.

This does not mean every Amazon Prime subscriber will receive money. Eligibility depends on the terms of the settlement and Amazon’s customer records.

Who may qualify for an Amazon refund?

The FTC has said that eligibility is connected to certain Prime enrollment methods, account activity and use of Prime benefits during the period covered by the settlement.

Earlier refund phases included some customers who used fewer Prime benefits during a one-year period.

Under the revised order, additional consumers who used between 11 and 20 Prime benefits during a one-year period may qualify for automatic payments. The revised process is intended to reach more eligible customers without requiring them to submit another claim form.

Payments may arrive through an electronic payment service or a mailed check, depending on the customer’s information and the approved payment method.

How to avoid Amazon refund scams

Public interest in the settlement has created an opportunity for scammers.

The FTC warns that consumers should be suspicious of unexpected phone calls, texts or emails that demand money, gift cards, passwords, account details or banking information in exchange for a refund.

A legitimate refund should not require a fee.

Consumers should also be careful about clicking links in messages claiming that a payment is waiting. When in doubt, it is safer to visit official FTC or Amazon pages directly rather than using a link sent by an unknown person.

What Amazon customers should do now

Eligible customers may not need to take any action because refunds are being issued automatically.

People who believe they may qualify should monitor their email, payment apps and mail for official notices or payments. They should also keep account information current and avoid sharing personal details with unsolicited callers or messages.

The FTC says automatic payments are expected to continue through April 2027, meaning some eligible consumers may receive refunds later than others.
